Tanning Tips

T
ry to hurry a tan and always use common sense. This is the most important rule. In other words: never sunbathe more than once a day. As a rule of thumb: up to ten sessions in two to three weeks. The tan achieved will then be retained by sunbathing once or twice a week.
If you are taking medications, please be aware that certain medications may be photosensitive. That is, they may cause an adverse reaction when the body is exposed to UV light. A list, which identifies many photosensitive medications, foods and ingredients, should be on display in your salon. Always consult your physician if you have any questions or concerns.

Before tanning, remove all cosmetics from your skin and take off all jewelry. Before and after tanning use skincare products to keep an attractive tan looking good for longer. Solar cosmetics are particularly suitable for this type of skin care because they are tailored to the specific needs of tanned skin. Ask your salon for details.

Follow the recommended exposure schedule for your skin type. It should be listed on the front of the tanning unit. Consult with the salon staff who will advice you on proper procedures.

Keep your eyes closed and always wear protective goggles while tanning. Contact lenses should be removed prior to tanning.

General Faqs

How often do you change your bulbs?
At California Tan OK we have thousand hour lamps, which we change between 500 – 600 hours to insure the best color possible.

Can I tan while I’m pregnant?
Ultraviolet radiation from tanning equipment does not affect tissue below the surface of the skin including a developing fetus. But pregnant women should be discouraged from tanning because medical professionals do not know how pregnancy is affected by heat created by electrical components. Tan and Tone America only allows pregnant women to tan with the Leg Tanner.

Can I wear contact lenses while tanning?
Tanning can cause contact lenses to become dry. Tanners may want to remove contacts before their session. If this is not possible, moisturizing drops before and after are recommended.

Is it really important to use eyewear while tanning?
Yes. Your cornea, lens, and retina can be damaged from not wearing protective eyewear. Over time these injuries from unprotected UV exposure can lead to loss of night vision and color vision. Your eyes are much more valuable than the few dollars it cost to purchase eyewear.

Is there any danger in tanning nude?
The potential danger lies in the areas of the body such as armpits, back of the legs and buttocks. They can suffer erythema (sunburn) using the same light intensity that only tans the rest of the body.

Can I catch diseases from the tanning units?
No. California Tan OK uses a quad-disinfectant.

Why isn’t my tan getting darker?
Using a tanning lotion immediately before tanning and a moisturizer afterward will help you reach your maximum tanning potential. Also, moving from entry level to upgrade tanning units will also help you get as dark as possible. Don’t forget to use a tanning sticker to actually see your results.
Remember, when building your base tan, tanning frequently is the key.

Isn’t it true you need to get one good burn to start a tan?
No. A sunburn is a totally different process of the skin. Sunburn results when the amount of UV exposure exceeds the skins natural tanning ability, sending an increase in blood flow to the affected area in an attempt to repair damage. When you burn yourself, you not only set back the tanning process, but you expose yourself to several potential problems, such as: premature wrinkling, uneven blotching patches on the skin, deprive your body of the positive effects of the sun.

To shower or not to shower?
Heat from the shower opens pores and enables the skin to breathe and take in oxygen vital for the tanning process. Showering also washes away dirt and dead skin cells which could filter ultraviolet penetration when you tan. Showering also allows lotions to penetrate better. Dry skin does not tan as well as moist skin. After tanning you should wait a short period of time before showering to allow moisturizers from the tanning lotions to absorb into the skin.

What is photosensitivity?
Photosensitivity is a condition in which the skin reacts abnormally to light, especially UV rays or sunlight, due to the presence of medication, hormones, or heavy metals in the body. At California Tan OK we have a photosensitizing medication list on or around the tanning counter.

I am Redheaded and have Fair-skin, am I still able to tan?
Even if you can’t tan through traditional means, Magic Tan gives you a beautiful golden tan that looks completely natural. Hydrating nutrients enrich your skin, giving you a beautiful glow you thought you’d never achieve.

What is the Mystic Tan Booth?
The Mystic Tan™ booth is a private, full-body, self-contained unit, with a DHA tanning process that utilizes MagneTan™ technology. Its revolutionary process allows the booth to apply a uniform amount of tanning solution to your entire body in just seconds. When the tanning process is finished, the client simply steps out of the booth, towels-off any excess mist, dresses, and exits. The result is a uniform, natural-looking cocoa bronze tan in less than five minutes.

What is MagneTan Technology?
MagneTan™ technology is a patented process that uses the human body’s own magnetic properties to attract our proprietary cocoa bronz solution to all exposed skin. When our special solution passes through the booths nozzles, the particles of solution are polarized, taking on the characteristics of tiny magnets. These particles adhere evenly to the skin to create a smooth, natural-looking cocoa bronz tan.

Will it turn me orange?
No, not at all! In the past, most self-tanners were creams and lotions applied by hand. That meant inconsistent coverage. Excessive amounts applied in a single application can give an orange glow to the skin. Not enough lotion left unattractive streaks. Hand-held spray-on applicators tend to run and can also cause streaking. The MagneTan™ technology used to apply our proprietary cocoa bronz solution assures that all areas of the body get a uniform coating of the solution in the exact quantity required to produce a cocoa bronz tan.

What should I wear in the tanning booth?
Most people do not wear anything. The room is completely private and you will receive the best all-over tan with no tan lines. However, if you do wear a bathing suit, underwear or anything else please, be aware that whatever you wear may be stained. The bronzer we use for your initial color is water-soluble and should wash out of anything you wear, but the DHA applied may cause permanent stains on any clothing you wear inside the booth.

Will I be wet when I step out of the Mystic Tan booth?
The mist applied in the Mystic Tan™ tanning booth is very fine. By the time you step out of the booth most of the mist will have dried, but there may still be a few moist areas. You may see small droplets clinging to the body hair on your arms or legs. This remaining moisture can be removed quite easily by toweling dry. Do not worry about wiping off the solution with the towel. Toweling does not streak the tan, and any solution that comes off on the towel was excess and will not affect your tan. Just towel off the same way you do when you take a shower. Be sure you have toweled all moist areas before dressing.

How long do I have to wait after a tanning session before I can shower?
We recommend that you wait a minimum of 4 hours after tanning to give the DHA enough time to fully set. If you shower earlier, you may diminish the intensity of the tan. When you do shower the initial tan created by the water-soluble bronzer will wash off, but the DHA will remain and create your long term tan.

What happens if the sunless solution gets in my eyes?
There is nothing in the mist that will harm your eyes.

Should I cover my hair while tanning in the Mystic Tan tanning booth?
Many clients wear disposable shower caps, provided by Totally Tan, to keep the mist from getting in their hair. Other clients tan without covering their hair. The solution will not penetrate the hair follicles.

Has anyone had an allergic reaction to the sunless tanning solution?
The components in our sunless tanning solution have been proven to be safe for use on the skin. If you have had previous allergic reactions to self tanning lotions or cosmetics you may want to do a “patch test” by putting a small amount of the sunless solution on a small area of the skin to test for possible reactions.

Do I need to hold my breath during the tanning session?
We recommend that you do hold your breath during the actual misting process, which lasts 12 to 18 seconds. We make this recommendation because most individuals prefer not to breathe in the mist, even though there is nothing in it that would cause any harm if you did breathe it in.

Will the components of the sunless solution make my skin have an unpleasant smell?
The DHA reacting to proteins in your skin can leave a slight starchy smell. But our Totally Tan solution has a pleasant cucumber melon fragrance which makes it barely noticeable if at all, and is usually not noticeable to others around you.

Are there ways to enhance the sunless tan results?

Yes, by keeping your skin moisturized prior to tanning will help the skin absorb the sunless tanning solution. Using a moisturizer frequently will help the tan last longer. You should apply moisturizer but not until after your first shower. Do not apply moisturizer during the hours between your Mystic Tan session and your first shower.

Can I go swimming after tanning in the Mystic Tan booth?
Yes, but for the best results avoid chemically treated swimming pools and spas for 24 hours. Swimming in chlorinated water at any time can bleach the sunless tan and possibly cause streaking.
top of page

How many sunless tanning sessions do I need to achieve the color I want?
You will be noticeable tanner after one session, but it may take additional sessions to achieve your desired color. Once you reach the color you desire you should be able to maintain it by tanning once or twice a week.

If I tan in the Mystic Tan tanning booth, can I also tan in tanning beds and in the sun?
Yes. There is nothing in our sunless solution that would prevent you from tanning in tanning beds or the sun. In fact, a number of customers have found that tanning with UV rays and then our sunless solution actually gives them a better overall tan. If you do plan to use a tanning bed and the Mystic Tan booth in the same day we recommend that you tan in the tanning bed first. Remember however, that the sunless solution does not give you any protection from UV rays.

Because of my fair skin and have never been able to tan before. Will the Mystic Tan tanning booth give me a tan?
Yes. The Mystic Tan™ tanning booth was designed specifically for individuals who can’t or don’t want to tan conventionally.

Can I use the Mystic Tan booth if I am pregnant?
We recommend consulting with your doctor before proceeding with a Mystic Tan tanning session.
